SBC IX – 3 Players, Three Different Bowls

First, let’s check out the other two Super Bowls that were made in this year’s challenge.

First this libation cup by Lew Shieber. I love that he says about the project this piece is a part of “from a culture that doesn’t exist in our history, but might have in an alternate time.” That is totally how I think of my work!

Next is a video of Laurie Jane Kern’s wonderful patinated thick, thick, thick copper bowl. I love the music, hehe.

Here’s an image of the finished bowl

Now onto my entry!

This year I decided to try and do a simpler bowl. Not the biggest thing I’ve ever done (like last year) not the one with the most parts or the most rivets. Simple and easy with a few subtle bits to break up the larger whole.

Well that kind of worked. The bowl was the size that I wanted, but it morphed away from my original simpler design to become what it was meant to be. This one it probably the least bowl-y of all my bowls, but it does still have that concave resting place in the middle of it.

The original design was somewhat yin-yangish, but I ended up rotating the placement of the two larger pieces making the whole design more dynamic. The u-shapes help reign it in a bit drawing the eye back into the bowl and the base (as always) was a bit of a struggle to figure out but ended up complementing the bowl.

Now if I can just figure out a name…

September 2014 Foldforming Workshop Student Work

Action Shot
Action Shot

We had another great Foldforming class this past weekend and once again I am surprised by all the different ways that my students can create using just the four basic folds I teach.

Strangely, it seemed that this time around my students were interested in making super skinny folds, which is cool, but they’re very hard to open. It’s funny how there seems to be waves of what each class wants to try out.

There were also a number of what I call Subtle Folds; folds with a more fluid feel to them. Also, multiple hard folds on one piece, like side-by-side boat or T folds. We even had a surprise student: Mackenzie, the Guild’s workshop coordinator! It was fun, as always. Maybe next time you’ll join us…

Another Great Batch of Students!

Yesterday I taught my first workshop of 2014 and this year’s first students were great! Once again I am reminded how varied the ideas can be from using just four different folds. Every batch of students comes up with different ways to combine them and create interesting samples and cuffs. I always have a great time.

This time we had people who all had at least some experience working with metal, though the levels were varied. I tried to get photos of everyone’s pieces, but sometimes students are shy or too quick for me to get photos before they pack all their things.

I am hoping to have another fold forming workshop scheduled for later this spring or perhaps early summer. I can’t wait!
