Sacred Space

X-base Offering Bowl ©2004 copper, NuGold bronze

Some cultures encourage a community area of sacredness.  Others keep sacred areas in their homes – small places of devotion.  This originally prompted my idea of an offering bowl (something I developed in college).  But lately I’ve been thinking of an even smaller area – jewelry as sacred space.

I’m not talking about religious adornment.  Rather, something we take with us that reminds us of the sacredness in the world and within ourselves.  Often in life we have to wear a “public face,” a mask that hides a portion of our true self.  Wearing a favorite piece of jewelry can help us to remember that we are more than what our public role is, we are multi-layered individuals.

What keepsakes do you carry with you to remind yourself of who you are?
