Working in a Series

Why do we as artists sometimes choose to work in a series?  Sometimes artists never have intentional series, but instead work through different periods in their careers.  In the jewelry world there are a lot of production series or lines, but working in a series doesn’t always have to be about production.

As you know by now I am currently working on a series called Elements, so that is why I started thinking about this question.  I haven’t worked in many series before, so why now?  I think that I’ve chosen to do this series to help create a sense of cohesion in my work and also to take the time to really work through an idea and process.  I enjoyed making Fire so much, that I wanted to take it further and a grouping of elements seemed right to me.  I’ve tried to push the series into slightly different directions, but still stay true to the original idea.

To me it’s also an answer to not working in a production mode.  I get bored with doing the same thing over and over, so I need to switch it up to keep it fresh.  Working in a series gives me the opportunity of creating a “line” with a limited amount of repetition.  I know that each piece will be related, but still an individual piece able to stand on its own.

Why do other artists work in series?  Why do others choose never to work with that constraint?  I’m not sure, but any artists out there feel free to leave your thoughts on the matter.
